Steve Smith expressed his admiration for Marnus Labuschagne, highlighting his significant comeback during the summer as he gets closer to rejoining the Test squad for the upcoming home Ashes series. After being sidelined from the West Indies Tests earlier this year due to a dip in form, Labuschagne has made a strong comeback in the ongoing Sheffield Shield, consistently scoring centuries.
“At the beginning of the summer, he confidently told me, ‘I’ll make it to that Test team by the first Test.’ He’s proven true to his words,” Smith commented. “Recently, I sent him a message expressing how proud I was of his achievements. After being dropped, he has made an impressive return by scoring four centuries in six games.”
“He’s shown a strong determination. Although he’s yet to be officially selected, he’s certainly done many things right,” Smith added.
Labuschagne has expressed his willingness to play as an opener if necessary to make his return. The No.3 spot, his usual position, is currently held by all-rounder Cameron Green.
Regarding his own preparation, Smith feels rejuvenated and ready for the Ashes, having not picked up a bat since late August. “Mentally, I get exhausted quicker than before. Ten years ago, I thrived on playing every game possible. Now, Test cricket is my main focus,” he shared as he gears up to lead Australia, with Pat Cummins likely unavailable for the Ashes’ opening.
“When I play heavily at the start, by summer’s end, I’m often mentally drained and unable to perform at my peak. Last summer, I batted best toward the end against India, after not having played much initially,” he continued.
Smith also mentioned a new approach, reducing his practice time to remain mentally sharp. “I find two practice sessions enough to get back in form. My priority is maintaining mental freshness, even if I’m not practicing as much. It’s about being in the right mindset and concentrating fully during matches.”
“The brain works in mysterious ways. I feel like I elevate my game and aim to set a high standard,” he added.
The Ashes series’ first Test starts on November 21 in Perth.
