Crucial BCCI AGM: Presidential Election Takes Center Stage
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to host its 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on September 28. Notices have been dispatched to all affiliated member units, stating that elections for all positions, if necessary, will be conducted on the same day.
Despite the National Sports Act not being formally implemented yet, the Board will continue adhering to the Lodha Committee guidelines, which impose a 70-year age limit for office-bearers. It is, however, improbable that elections will be required for any positions. Secretary Devajit Saikia, Treasurer Baltej Singh Bhatia, and Joint Secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai are expected to retain their roles, though there might be a new president. Sourav Ganguly from the East Zone became president in 2019, succeeded by Roger Binny from the South Zone.
There is speculation that Board officials have approached a few former Indian cricketers from the West Zone as potential presidential candidates. However, no decision has been reached on whether to continue the tradition by appointing a former cricketer as Binny’s successor or to promote Vice-President Rajiv Shukla to the presidency. Binny vacated his position as BCCI president upon turning 70 on July 19, and in his absence, Shukla chaired the recent apex council meeting.
The AGM’s agenda includes forming a new committee, along with establishing a new IPL Governing Council and the Women’s Premier League panel. Coincidentally, the AGM falls on the same day as the Asia Cup final, which could mean that BCCI office-bearers might forego attending the continental event, even if India reaches the final. The Asian Cricket Council is currently led by Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board.
