England Dominates New Zealand in 2nd T20I with Brook and Salt’s Explosive Firepower
England capitalized on some sloppy New Zealand fielding to secure a 65-run victory in the second T20 International in Christchurch on Monday.
Following the abandonment of the opening match due to rain, England amassed an impressive 236 for four in their 20 overs at Hagley Oval, after Black Caps captain Mitchell Santner opted to bowl first.
England captain Harry Brook (78) and opener Phil Salt (85) launched a fierce attack on the New Zealand bowlers, aided by the home team’s mistakes, including misfields, inaccurate throws, and dropped catches.
Wicketkeeper Tim Seifert dropped a high catch from Jacob Bethell due to strong northwest winds, and James Neesham later dropped Brook.
The missed opportunity to dismiss Brook proved pivotal, as the 26-year-old smashed 78 runs off 35 balls, contributing to a 129-run partnership with Salt.
Showing aggressive intent, Brook hit a massive six over midwicket just two balls after his reprieve, with the ball traveling more than 100 meters and landing outside the ground.
Brook’s innings included six boundaries and five sixes, ending when he mistimed a lofted shot to long-on.
Salt supported the innings with 85 runs off 56 balls, rotating the strike effectively and punishing any loose deliveries.
Tom Banton added an explosive 29 from just 12 balls, boosting England to a record T20 score in Christchurch.
New Zealand’s response faltered early with both Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra departing in the second over.
A promising 69-run partnership between Seifert and Mark Chapman revived hopes briefly, but once they were dismissed around the 10-over mark, New Zealand’s chase lost momentum.
England’s bowlers, including spinners Adil Rashid (4-32) and Liam Dawson (2-38), along with seamer Brydon Carse (2-27), maintained control to bowl out New Zealand for 171.
The third T20 match of the series is scheduled to be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Thursday night.
