Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain shared on Saturday that he required an over to settle in as he initially encountered some difficulties against Afghanistan in the first match of the series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Rishad became the first wrist spinner from Bangladesh to claim a five-wicket haul, helping the hosts secure a 74-run victory over the West Indies in a low-scoring first ODI by dismissing them for 133 runs after posting a total of 207 in 49.4 overs.

“I needed one over to adapt to the conditions. Initially, I found it challenging, but later on, I adjusted and managed well,” Rishad expressed to reporters post-match.

“I know what the team expects from me and strive to ensure that even small contributions are impactful,” he mentioned, adding that he relished each wicket he secured.

Rishad stated that they remained confident of winning despite a subpar score. “All 11 of us were committed to fighting until the last ball. We weren’t concerned about the result. Instead, we focused on how we would persevere and maintain our process,” he remarked.

Bangladesh managed to surpass 200 runs, with Rishad chipping in a brisk 26 off 13 balls. The 23-year-old expressed satisfaction in contributing with the bat, saying, “My role is to add a few extra runs for the team. Increasing our score to 210-215 instead of just 180 is beneficial. I aimed for that, and it worked.”

“As a player, contributing in all three areas is ideal. I always try to give more than 100%, hoping that God will reward my efforts in at least one area,” he noted.

However, Rishad was tight-lipped about his recent conversation with spin maestro Rashid Khan during their UAE tour. “We discussed technical approaches and processes, the kind of exchanges that usually occur between leg spinners,” Rishad said.

Prior to the series, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons discussed that interaction with Rashid. “It’s always beneficial. Rashid Khan, being the top spinner globally, shares his expertise generously,” he commented.

Simmons revealed it was Bangladesh’s spin bowling consultant Mushtaq Ahmed who suggested a chat between Rishad and Rashid after the series wrapped up.

“Mushtaq approached Rashid for a discussion with Rishad. He generously spent nearly an hour working with him and sharing insights. Rashid showed great willingness to help, which is typical of his character. I’m confident Rishad learned a lot,” Simmons added.
