Nic Maddinson Overcomes Cancer: A Triumph in Health and Sport
Former Australian Test cricketer Nic Maddinson has shared that he spent most of 2025 battling testicular cancer, which had metastasized to parts of his abdominal lymph nodes and lung.
Maddinson last appeared in a competitive cricket match in March of this year, playing for New South Wales in Australia’s Sheffield Shield First-Class tournament. Shortly afterward, he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and then discovered that the cancer had spread.
“Hearing that I needed chemotherapy was pretty tough,” Maddinson revealed to Nine newspapers. “It had spread to parts of my abdominal lymph nodes and lung. That part was particularly daunting,” he explained.
“By the second or third week of treatment, I lost all my hair and felt quite unwell. I was taking steroids to help manage the side effects, but they kept me awake at night. I’d fall asleep around 1 a.m., but often be up until 6 a.m. That was challenging. I felt completely drained and needed to sleep around the clock. It was the longest, slowest nine weeks,” he continued.
Maddinson’s nine-week chemotherapy regimen began in mid-May and concluded in mid-July. In September, the 33-year-old received the good news that the treatment had been successful. On Thursday, he joined a practice session with fellow New South Wales squad members as he began his journey back to cricket.
Maddinson has played three Test matches for Australia in 2016 and featured in six T20Is from 2013 to 2018. He also participated in three Indian Premier League (IPL) matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru between 2014 and 2015.
