Mulani and Lad’s Dominant Stand Steers Mumbai Ahead on Day 1 against J&K

Mulani and Lad's Commanding Partnership Puts Mumbai in Control Against J&K on Day 1

In a team brimming with young talent like Ayush Mhatre and Musheer Khan, alongside seasoned players such as Ajinkya Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan, Siddhesh Lad and Shams Mulani often operate away from the limelight. However, on the opening day of the new Ranji Trophy season, it was Lad and Mulani who emerged as pivotal figures in Mumbai’s impressive comeback against Jammu & Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium.

Amidst the verdant surroundings on Wednesday, 33-year-old Lad scored a commanding 116, while Mulani remained unbeaten on 79. This contribution helped the Shardul Thakur-led team reach 336 for five in 83 overs by the end of the day.

Mumbai experienced a shaky start, finding themselves at 141 for four with Musheer, Mhatre, Rahane, and Sarfaraz back in the pavilion. The responsibility then shifted to Lad and Mulani, who orchestrated a significant 159-run partnership for the fifth wicket, showcasing remarkable resilience.

Early in the day, the J&K pacers found assistance from a surface with a healthy grass covering. Aaqib Nabi struck early, catching Musheer behind in the day’s opening over. Yudhvir Singh soon followed, claiming the wickets of Mhatre and Rahane in quick succession. Sarfaraz seemed primed for a significant contribution, racing to 42 off 48 balls in a 67-run partnership with Lad, before being run out by J&K captain Paras Dogra’s direct hit in the 40th over.

As the pitch settled, Lad and Mulani seized the opportunity to counter-attack post-lunch. Lad’s perseverance paid off as he notched his 11th First-Class century, building on his stellar performance from the previous season, where he amassed 602 runs and led Mumbai to the semifinals in the 2024-25 Ranji campaign. His innings ended in the evening session when he ventured out against left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq, only to be stumped as the ball spun past his bat.
