Crucial BCCI Elections to Chart Future of Indian Cricket on September 28 in Mumbai

Pivotal BCCI Elections to Shape the Future of Indian Cricket

The BCCI has announced that its Annual General Meeting (AGM) is set for September 28, coinciding with the Asia Cup final. This meeting will be held at 11:30 AM at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, where elections for key positions such as president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer will take place. According to a communication from secretary Devajit Saikia to state associations, these elections are an important part of the agenda.

In addition to the elections, the AGM will also focus on forming the Apex Council of the BCCI, along with the Governing Councils for both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL). The BCCI plans to introduce one representative from the General Body and two from the Indian Cricketers’ Association into the Apex Council.

The primary objective is to establish a new set of office-bearers to govern Indian cricket for the next three years or until the Sports Bill potentially replaces the current constitution. While it remains uncertain if the BCCI will need fresh elections after the Sports Bill comes into effect in six months, the board is currently adhering to the Supreme Court-approved constitution recommended by the Lodha Committee.

Current indications suggest that Devajit Saikia will continue his role as secretary for another term, along with treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (from Chhattisgarh) and joint secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai (from Goa), both serving their first terms. However, the identities of the upcoming president and vice-president remain unclear. Rajeev Shukla, acting president after Roger Binny’s exit upon reaching the age of 70, could assume a significant role, potentially as IPL chairman, contingent on current IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal’s standing. Dhumal, who previously served as BCCI treasurer, is subject to a cooling-off period, although discussions continue about the nature of the IPL chairman’s role in this context.
