Gambhir Advocates for Improved Test Cricket Pitch Standards

India completed a 2-0 series victory shortly after starting on the fifth day, but head coach Gautam Gambhir noted that the pitch conditions in Delhi could have been improved. After suffering a 3-0 home defeat against New Zealand on spin-friendly tracks, India prepared flatter surfaces in Ahmedabad and Delhi. In Ahmedabad, West Indies collapsed with poor batting performances, while in Delhi, they showed improvement on an even flatter pitch.
Gambhir expressed concern about the pitch lacking proper carry. “I felt we could have had a better wicket here,” said Gambhir. “Yes, we got the result on Day 5, but I think the nicks need to carry.”
India bowled for 200.4 overs across both innings in Delhi, with 118.5 of those in the second innings after Shubman Gill enforced the follow-on. Bumrah bowled 31.5 overs and Siraj delivered 24. Despite creating impressive moments, the bowlers were often neutralized as batsmen managed to defend easily. “There needs to be something for fast bowlers too,” Gambhir commented. “We talk about spinners, but when you have quality fast bowlers, they should be in the game as well. While it’s okay if there’s not much, there has to be some carry. The lack of carry was concerning.”
“Going forward, we can improve Test cricket pitches because we all have the responsibility to keep Test cricket vibrant. The key to sustaining Test cricket is playing on good surfaces,” he added.
Pitch conditions might be scrutinized in India’s next home Test against South Africa in Kolkata, beginning on November 14.
