West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has been fined for violating the ICC code of conduct during the ongoing Test match against India in Delhi. In addition to receiving a fine of 25 percent of his match fee, Seales has also been given his second demerit point within a 24-month span, the first of which was against Bangladesh during a Test match last December.
The incident took place on the first day of the Test during the 29th over of the Indian innings. After fielding the ball on his follow-through, Seales threw it back at batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal, hitting him on the pads. This was deemed a violation of Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
Despite the sanction, Seales contested the penalty proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, resulting in a formal hearing. The 24-year-old fast bowler explained that he was attempting to run out the Indian opener. However, after reviewing replay footage, the match referee considered Seales’ actions inappropriate and unnecessary.
