The upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League will feature five teams in a streamlined schedule from mid-December to mid-January, as confirmed by BPL GC secretary Iftikhar Rahman Mithu on Saturday.

Iftikhar explained to reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium that the decision results from time constraints ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup next year.

“The board has decided to host the BPL from mid-December to mid-January,” said Iftekhar. “Due to the limited time frame we have this year, we’re comfortable with five teams. This doesn’t rule out having six or seven teams in the future, but our current priority is organizing a five-team BPL within this one-month period,” he stated.

“We must conclude in January to ensure everything is wrapped up before the February World Cup,” he mentioned. “While expanding to six or seven teams isn’t impossible, currently, we’re prioritizing five teams for this one-month period. The EOI will be announced tomorrow,” he added.

It’s possible that reigning BPL champions Fortune Barishal may not participate in the upcoming BPL season. Tamim Iqbal, who leads the Fortune Barishal team, recently declared their boycott of all cricket under Aminul Islam’s leadership, whom they regard as illegitimate. Read more here.

Iftekhar expressed hope that Fortune Barishal would reconsider and join the competition.

“I hope they (Fortune Barishal team) choose to participate,” said Iftekhar. “While we can’t compel anyone to join, we welcome them. They have managed their team well, and there have been no complaints. Well-managed teams like theirs are always welcome. However, participation is a choice, not an obligation. Considering their effort and following, my request is for them to join,” he elaborated.

Iftekhar also noted that franchise selection will be stricter this year due to past financial controversies within BPL.

“The previous challenges mainly stemmed from franchise-related issues. Therefore, selection will be stringent. Good financial standing is essential, but competent cricket management is equally crucial. We will mainly assess these factors,” he emphasized.
