Ruben Trumpelmann’s all-round performance (3/28 & 11 off 8 balls) and Zane Green’s steady 30* off 23 balls helped Namibia secure a thrilling last-ball victory over South Africa in the only T20I held in Windhoek on Saturday. Chasing a target of 135, Green hit a low full toss off the last delivery from Simelane to ensure a four-wicket win for Namibia. This marked the second instance of South Africa losing to an Associate nation in T20Is, with the previous loss against the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Adelaide.

Opting to bat first, South Africa witnessed early dismissals of Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks. However, Lhua-dre Pretorius and Rubin Hermann stabilized the innings on a challenging pitch for run-scoring. The partnership contributed 30 runs before Hermann was dismissed by Trumpelmann, thanks to a brilliant diving catch at deep square leg.

South Africa stumbled to 68 for 5 by the 11th over after a few quick wickets. Jason Smith partnered with the lower order to accelerate the run rate, but boundaries were hard to find due to the pitch’s grip and bounce. The disciplined Namibian bowlers restricted South Africa, and although Bjorn Fortuin and Gerald Coetzee added useful runs towards the end, South Africa could only manage 134.

The Namibian batters, too, faced difficulties initially. However, the erratic bowling of South African pacers, notably Gerald Coetzee, who left the field injured after four balls in his second over, provided some respite. Namibia’s top order struggled, but despite losing early wickets, they managed to score 51 runs in seven overs.

Gerhard Erasmus, JJ Smit, and Jason Kruger added crucial stability during the middle overs, keeping Namibia in the game. With 28 runs required from the final three overs, the task remained challenging, but Green and Trumpelmann each hit a boundary to reduce the requirement to 11 off the last over.

Green shifted the momentum in the last over by hitting Simelane’s first ball for six. Simelane bowled full deliveries for the next four balls, leaving Namibia needing a run off the final delivery. Attempting a yorker, Simelane missed his length, and the resulting low full toss was easily dispatched for a boundary.

Brief Scores: South Africa 134/8 in 20 overs (Jason Smith 31, Rubin Hermann 23; Ruben Trumpelmann 3-23, Max Heingo 2-32) lost to Namibia 138/6 in 20 overs (Gerhard Erasmus 31, Zane Green 30*; Nandre Burger 2-21, Andile Simelane 2-28) by 4 wickets
