Bangladesh’s spin coach, Mushtaq Ahmed, stated that their batters should focus on playing the ball instead of fixating on Rashid Khan. Rashid has dominated their lineup in both ODIs, helping Afghanistan secure the series with one match remaining.
Rashid took four wickets in the first game and an impressive five-for (5 for 17) in the second ODI on Saturday, leading Afghanistan to an 81-run victory.
Mushtaq observed, “They are focusing too much on Rashid rather than on the ball. Although he’s not a major turner of the ball, his consistency and experience make him a wicket-taker. We need to shift our approach quickly.”
“With the right temperament, any bowler can be tackled. While Rashid has been a formidable opponent for Afghanistan over the years, our batters must learn to concentrate on facing the ball,” he added.
Mushtaq stressed the importance of taking singles against spinners during the middle overs to maintain pressure on the opponents.
“Improving techniques against spinners to rotate strike will put more pressure on the bowlers than on us,” Mushtaq noted.
“We need to address our batting challenges. While our players have the ability, competing against experienced spinners like Rashid requires quick and proactive adjustments,” he said.
Mushtaq called for the batters to demonstrate increased application and situational awareness.
“If we can adapt our spin gameplay in middle overs, Bangladesh can challenge any team,” Mushtaq believes.
“Playing too many dot balls forces risky shots, leading to wickets. Scoring in singles and doubles places more stress on spinners,” he explained.
He mentioned the need for the batsmen to transition their mindset from T20Is to ODIs for success in the longer format.
“The challenge lies in transitioning from T20 to ODIs. While other areas like fielding, fitness, and bowling are performing well, improving batting in the 50-over format is crucial,” Mushtaq concluded.
