Shubman Gill’s cricketing journey is advancing swiftly with Test captaincy, a successful series in England, and now leading in ODIs. Despite this, India’s latest cricket sensation stays humble.
“The recent months have been thrilling,” he shared, showing a hunger for future achievements rather than resting on current laurels. “I’m eagerly anticipating what’s to come. I aim to stay focused on the present and not dwell on past achievements, either personally or as a team. My goal is to strive for victories in the upcoming challenges.”
Before the second Test against the West Indies at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, Gill addressed key questions directly, expressing confidence in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s availability for the 2027 World Cup without any reservations.
“Yes, certainly,” he affirmed in Hindi with assuredness. “The expertise and victories they bring to India are rare. Few players globally have such skill, quality, and experience. I am pleased in this regard.”
Icons of Indian cricket, Kohli and Rohit, have decided to focus solely on ODIs. They will be playing under Gill’s leadership in the upcoming series in Australia.
Ajit Agarkar, however, was less decisive on the subject recently. “It’s not a matter for today’s discussion,” remarked the chairman of selectors in Ahmedabad. Gill, on the other hand, complemented his predecessor, expressing admiration for Rohit’s leadership and his own desire to emulate such qualities.
“I’ve learned much from Rohit bhai, especially his composure and camaraderie with the team, which I aspire to emulate. These are traits I aim to cultivate.”
Gill also emphasized his strong professional relationship with coach Gautam Gambhir, highlighting their mutual intent to create a secure environment for the players. “Our collaboration is straightforward,” the captain remarked. “We focus on making players feel secure and considering the best team combinations.”
Gill acknowledged the demands of playing across formats and the resulting mental strain. “Physically, I generally feel well. However, mental fatigue can set in, given the constant playing schedule. Keeping up with my own expectations is sometimes challenging.”
