IND vs WI, 2nd Test: The Significance Behind West Indies’ Black Armbands
The West Indian players honored former cricketer Bernard Julien by wearing black armbands on the first day of the second Test against India at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Julien passed away last week at the age of 75 in northern Trinidad.
Julien, a left-arm seamer and right-handed batsman, was a member of the 1975 World Cup-winning West Indies team. Over his career, he played in 24 Tests, scoring 866 runs with an average of 30.92, and took 50 wickets with an average of 37.36. In ODIs, he took 18 wickets at an average of 25.72.
He made a significant impact in the inaugural ODI World Cup, securing four-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka in the group stage and New Zealand in the semifinal. In the final against Australia, his quick 37-ball 26 helped set up the West Indies’ 17-run victory.
Julien’s international career ended in 1982 when he received a lifetime ban for participating in a rebel tour to South Africa.
