As anticipated, former captain Dane van Niekerk has not been included in the Women’s World Cup squad, as Cricket South Africa announced a competitive 15-member team for the tournament on Wednesday, September 3. Van Niekerk had recently reversed her international retirement and was part of a 20-member group training for the event, but ultimately did not make the final list.

Laura Wolvaardt has been appointed as the team’s leader, which includes seasoned players such as Chloe Tyron, Marizanne Kapp, Sune Luus, and Ayabonga Khaka. The role of wicketkeeper will be held by Sinalo Jafta and Karabo Meso, the latter making her senior World Cup debut having previously played in a few Under-19 World Cups.

Young allrounder Miane Smit, who served as the traveling reserve for last year’s T20 World Cup, will fulfill the same role again. The team will head to Pakistan later this month for preparation, engaging in three ODIs before starting their World Cup campaign. South Africa’s first match is set against England on October 3, followed by games against New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Australia.

Squad: Laura Wolvaardt (C), Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, Marizanne Kapp, Tazmin Brits, Sinalo Jafta, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Annerie Dercksen, Anneke Bosch, Masabata Klaas, Sune Luus, Karabo Meso, Tumi Sekhukhune, Nondumiso Shangase

“From the moment I joined this team, and even before during the qualification phase, the focus has been on reaching this point,” said head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. “Reflecting on our preparations, we can be proud of our efforts. We are sending a squad to the World Cup with the potential to make South Africa proud.”

“I am delighted for all the players and the management team heading to India, and I am thrilled to see what they will accomplish together. We have faith in our players’ ability to perform on the global stage. We must carry this belief with us at every step, with the backing of the entire nation.”
