Marufa Akter: The Journey Within
In the lead-up to the Women’s ODI World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh’s young pacer Marufa Akter was fixated on making her debut memorable on this grand stage. Her dedication paid off when she played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s opening win against Pakistan in Colombo.
“I always dream about my first match, sleeping and waking, I’m determined to perform well and be the match winner,” she expressed after her team’s triumph. Marufa stood out as the sole pacer amidst a spinner-heavy lineup designed for the slow track at R. Premadasa Stadium. At just 20, she showcased her prowess with sheer pace, agility, and remarkable swing.
Inspired by Australian legend Mitchell Starc, Marufa has chosen well. During the match, her inswingers left Pakistan in disarray, particularly when she dismissed Omaima Sohail and the in-form Sidra Amin with consecutive deliveries in the opening over. Her performance caught the attention of cricket icons worldwide, with Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga commenting: “Pure skill, excellent control. So far, the best delivery in this tournament.”
Marufa’s knack for impactful bowling was previously highlighted during the 2023 T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka, where she claimed three vital wickets, including prominent player Chamari Athapaththu. Another testament to her ability came with figures of 4 for 29, steering Bangladesh to a historic ODI win over India in 2023. Smriti Mandhana praised her efforts, noting, “Her passion and skill, despite her young age, are impressive. Her release point confounds batters, and like many, we eagerly await her performance on different pitches.”
Building Strength
Initially a wiry young bowler fueled by passion, Marufa has since fortified her physical foundation through a structured regimen of fitness, power training, and technical refinement, guided by former Bangladesh strength and conditioning coach Ian Durrant.
“Previously, I could bench press 25–30 kg, now I handle 42–44 kg, and my squats have improved from 30–35 kg to 60 kg,” Marufa shared enthusiastically in a video from the Bangladesh Cricket Board. She admires Pakistani cricketer Diana Baig for her strength and swing capabilities.
Marufa left a lasting impression as Bangladesh’s top wicket-taker at the 2023 U-19 T20 World Cup and with stellar performances at the 2022 Asian Games. Captain Nigar Sultana Joty, observing her development, noted, “Marufa has matured, forming her own strategies and plans for various scenarios.”
Rooted Beginnings
Marufa’s rise from a farming background to cricket prominence is inspiring. During the pandemic, videos shared by Arifa Jahan Bithi— who runs Bangladesh’s only girls’ academy—highlighted Marufa’s talent, despite halted training and funding. Arifa continues to be a supportive pillar in her journey.
“Marufa embodies hard work from a young age in the fields. Her background has helped her tremendously,” Arifa remarked, recalling Marufa’s stunning opening over in the World Cup. For Marufa’s family, her success is transformative, notably changing her father’s perspective on her career choice.
The League Aspiration
Marufa’s journey from Mohammedan Sporting Club at 15, through to becoming Bangladesh’s pace spearhead, highlights her growth from a shy teenager determined to excel in cricket into a confident competitor. While her future in leagues like the WPL and WBBL is still being considered, experts believe it’s only a matter of time before she joins.
“It’s important for talents like Marufa to participate in international leagues; it would inspire many back home,” Arifa stated. “Her World Cup performance should attract franchises,” Joty added, emphasizing her need to focus on the World Cup and build physical and mental strength for the future.
For now, Marufa’s philosophy remains straightforward: “It’s always me vs. me, not me vs. others,”—setting a clear mindset as she moves forward in her promising cricket career. The cricket world eagerly anticipates her continued impact.
