THE BIG DECISION

Indian cricket is stepping into a new phase with Shubman Gill assuming the ODI captaincy, a role he took on in Tests a few months back. This decision is part of a strategic plan for the 2027 World Cup, as explained by Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors.

Although the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is two years away, planning can be tricky due to the irregular scheduling of ODIs, according to Agarkar. Managing three captains across different formats is particularly challenging for the coaching staff.

During a press conference about the limited-overs squads for the Australia series, Agarkar stated: “It’s important to start focusing on upcoming World Cups. ODI cricket, being played less frequently now, doesn’t provide many opportunities to prepare the next captain adequately.”

“We’re still two years away. Although it may seem long, the number of ODIs leading up to the World Cup is uncertain. The last ODI was played in March during the Champions Trophy, and the next will be on October 19. This highlights the current challenges with one-day cricket,” Agarkar noted.

“While T20 World Cup has been the main focus, planning for the upcoming ODI World Cup is starting. Having three captains across formats is tough, not just for selectors but for the coach planning with different leaders,” he added.

Gill has a demanding timetable ahead. He’s leading India in a two-Test series against West Indies, ending on October 14. This is followed by three ODIs against Australia on October 19, 23, and 25, with a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8, where he serves as vice-captain. South Africa will then visit India for a multi-format series from November 14 to December 19.

When questioned about the risk of burnout for Gill due to the packed schedule, Agarkar commented: “I hope not. He’s still young and has shown great promise during high-pressure matches in England. His one-day batting record speaks for itself, and we are optimistic about managing any burnout risks.”

“There’s a lot of cricket ahead over the next few months. While we aim to give Gill enough time to prepare for the next World Cup, we also need to manage his workload, ensuring he’s in the best condition,” added Agarkar.

Agarkar downplays Jadeja’s exclusion

On Jadeja’s exclusion from the one-day squad for the Australia tour, Agarkar explained it was a team balance decision rather than an assessment of his abilities.

“Regarding Jaddu, taking two left-arm spinners to Australia wasn’t feasible. He’s a key player, but competition for spots is fierce. Although part of the Champions Trophy squad, current conditions dictate a different combination, providing team balance with Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav,” he said.

“Spin requirements in Australia don’t demand more players. Jaddu is still vital, contributing as a batter, bowler, and fielder. Unfortunately, the short series limits options, but he’ll remain in consideration,” Agarkar assured.

Discussing Bumrah’s workload management – rested for the Australia ODIs but part of the T20I squad – Agarkar stated: “Bumrah is crucial, and we’ll rest him when possible. A strategic plan is in place to manage his workload, considering the entire team’s best interest.”

“It’s important to manage all senior players, including Siraj, to reduce injury risks as they contribute significantly in Test cricket. We aim to look after all key players for their longevity,” Agarkar concluded.
