Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan stressed the need for the team to improve their mindset to prevent stumbling in critical moments.

Bangladesh secured a four-wicket win against Afghanistan in the first match of the T20I series. Despite a strong start, they faced a dramatic batting collapse, losing six wickets for just nine runs, before Nurul and Rishad Hossain helped to seal victory.

After holding Afghanistan to 151 for 9, Bangladesh’s openers, Tanzid Tamim and Parvez Hossain Emon, provided a quick start. They surpassed 100 runs in just 11 overs, thanks to half-centuries from both openers.

However, a sudden collapse saw Bangladesh fall from 109 for no loss to 118 for 6 within 25 deliveries, disrupting their chase.

“Although we’ve been playing cricket for some time, we occasionally falter at crucial points due to our mindset. Despite the stable pitch and strong start from Emon and Tanzid, doubts crept in as Rashid and Noor Ahmed are top-notch spinners. Our focus should be on improving mentally rather than just skill-wise,” Nurul shared with reporters post-match.

“Afghanistan boasts world-class spinners, so it’s essential we prepare well against them. T20s are about scoring, and we aim to address our shortcomings and improve, particularly since another match awaits tomorrow. This issue isn’t new; it’s something we’ve long struggled with and needs addressing now,” he remarked.

“The sudden loss of wickets will certainly be a topic of our team discussions. This has been an ongoing issue, and we’ve been deliberating on solutions since the Asia Cup. Clearly, there’s significant room for improvement,” he added.

“In T20 cricket, the contributions of the top four batsmen are crucial. They’ve been performing well lately, even providing good starts during the Asia Cup. But cricket relies on the entire team’s effort, and success comes easier when batting, bowling, and fielding all align perfectly,” he concluded.

Bangladesh is set to face Afghanistan again in the second T20I today (October 3).
