Dhruv Jurel secured his spot in the Indian team for the Test series against West Indies due to Rishabh Pant’s injury during the England series. He maximized the opportunity by scoring his first Test century on the second day in Ahmedabad, Friday.

Jurel has spent considerable time on the bench, but he attributes his success to behind-the-scenes preparation.

“I engage in a lot of visualisation,” Jurel revealed after the second day’s play. “Whether I’m playing or not, I visualize scenarios. It helps me feel familiar with situations when I’m on the field, making them seem less novel. I think ahead about my stance and facing the bowlers, ensuring I’m always ready, regardless of my playing status.”

“[Visualisation of scenarios aids my preparation]. When anticipating a left-arm bowler, for instance, I visualize the field setup and scoring opportunities. In longer formats, I look for low-risk scoring methods, which I believe places the team in a favorable position.”

Since his Test debut, Jurel has played only five matches. Despite extended periods on the bench, he’s found ways to maintain motivation.

“I adhere to routines, visit the gym, and remain disciplined with practice sessions. Occasionally, doubt creeps in, but I persist, finding motivation to continue.”

“Being with the squad is a privilege, regardless of playing time. Few players have the chance to be part of a Test squad, and I value the experience. Even without playing time, I prepare diligently, knowing an opportunity will eventually arise, and I aim to be fully ready when it does.”

His 206-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja on Day 2 boosted India’s lead to 286 runs with five wickets remaining. Jurel is unsure about the team’s batting plans but observed that the pitch improved for batting as the day unfolded.

“The pitch is improving for batting, despite some turn available from footmarks. Otherwise, it’s relatively stable from the stump line.”

“While batting with Jaddu bhai, our strategy focused on extending the lead and scoring safely. We capitalized on our set positions to secure a significant lead, now 286 runs. The next steps depend on team decisions, which I’m comfortable with.”

Jurel’s milestone century was marked with a distinct gesture, holding his bat vertically and moving it to the left, in homage to the Indian Army, where his father served.

“The salute during my fifty celebration was for my father,” he admitted, adding, “But I planned the century celebration long ago, paying tribute to the army. The valor shown on battlefields invokes great respect, drawing parallels to our on-field efforts.”

“Future centuries will also honor the army. I’ve observed their dedication closely and often discuss it with my father. I’m pleased to acknowledge those truly deserving through my achievements.”
