New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra sustained a facial injury after colliding with a boundary hoarding while attempting a catch during training on Tuesday (September 30). As a result, he has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against Australia. All-rounder James Neesham has been called up as a replacement.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walters stated that the decision to send Ravindra home for recovery was made with the upcoming England series in mind, set to begin in two weeks.

“We’re all really disappointed for Rachin to be forced to miss the series,” Walters said. He sustained a significant laceration to his upper lip and nose area, which required specialized and intricate stitching and will take time to heal.

“Rachin is an important player for us, but his health and well-being are our top priorities, hence the decision,” he added.

Speaking about Neesham, Walters noted: “We’re fortunate to have Jimmy, who brings vast experience and all-round capabilities, ready to step in.”

This marks Ravindra’s second facial injury in 2025. Earlier this year, during the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, he was hit on the forehead while attempting a catch under floodlights during a tri-series game against South Africa in Lahore. This earlier injury sidelined him for the remainder of the tri-series and New Zealand’s opening match in the Champions Trophy against Pakistan.

The home series against Australia is set to commence on October 1 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, with the subsequent matches scheduled for October 3 and 4.
